Q1. What is an incentive spirometer?
An incentive spirometer is a hand-held device that helps people to take slow, deep breaths. It’s like exercise equipment for the lungs to keep them strong and working well. (ref: https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/use-incentive-spirometer.html)
Q2. What are the two types of incentive spirometers?
There are two types of incentive spirometer:
Flow-oriented incentive spirometer (FIS).
Volume-oriented incentive spirometer (VIS).
Each has its advantages and disadvantages.
Q3. What is a volume-oriented incentive spirometer (VIS)?
VIS is used to induce maximum inhalation by displaying the volume. This type uses a large piston to display the inhalation volume and a smaller piston to keep you at a lower airflow rate. It helps improve activity and movement in your diaphragm. Pros: It is easy to read the inhalation volume. Cons: Qualitatively understand the inhalation flow rate, and it is necessary to maintain a lower inhalation flow rate to obtain accurate results.
Q4. What is a flow-oriented incentive spirometer (VIS)?
FIS is designed with three different colored balls. As air enters each chamber, the balls rise, providing visual stimulation, and each ball represents a different flow rate corresponding to respiratory muscle strength. It helps increase the muscles in your upper chest. Pros: quickly understand the inhalation flow rate and the corresponding respiratory muscle strength. Cons: uneasy to know the correct inhalation volume.
Q5. What is Smart Tri-Ball Incentive Spirometer?
The Smart Tri-Ball is a breathing exerciser that includes a smart recorder to assist in recording all respiratory training efforts and digitalization. All data can be automatically transmitted to the app, allowing you to easily track your progress.
Q6. Can the Smart Tri-Ball replace the volumetric-type spirometer that I’m currently using?
Yes, both VIS and FIS are designed to encourage deep breathing, maintain lung expansion, improve lung capacity, increase mucus clearance, etc. The Smart Tri-Ball combines the Pros of VIS for easy reading of inspiratory volume and FIS for rapid understanding of inspiratory flow rate. It also digitizes all breathing training results, making it convenient for you to track your progress.
Q7. What does the Smart Recorder record?
The Smart Recorder helps record the results of your breathing training efforts, such as the number of training sessions performed each day, the number of balls lifted per session, the maximum inspiratory volume achieved, and the daily achievement rate.
Q8. What type of transmission technology does the Smart Recorder use?
The Smart Recorder uses ultrasound transmission. As long as you agree permissions to access microphone on your digital device such as a smartphone or tablet, transmission can be conducted without the need for Bluetooth or WiFi pairing, eliminating the hassle of connection issues and packet loss concerns.
Q9. How does the Smart Recorder work?
The Smart Recorder uses an infrared sensor to detect the balls of the Tri-Ball exerciser. When the ball reaches the top and is detected by the sensor, an ultrasound signal is emitted and received by the microphone of a mobile device. The results are then displayed as the number of balls lifted and the inspiratory volume.
Q10. How can the Smart Recorder help me?
Users who need to use Tri-ball exerciser for breathing training typically need to perform training sessions dozens to hundreds of times each day. Visual observation alone cannot accurately record the actual results of the training, including the number of sessions, the number of balls lifted, and the time the ball is held at the top to determine the volume data. A digital device like the Smart Recorder is like your eyes and hands to help you track your daily progress more accurately.
Q11. How do I install the Smart Recorder?
Installing the Smart Recorder is very simple. You just need to place the recorder in the same direction as the corrugated tube connector, snap it onto the top of the spirometer, and gently press down to secure it in place.
Q12. What are the contents included in the Smart Recorder package?
The Smart Recorder package includes one recorder, an instruction manual, two AAA alkaline batteries, three black labels, and a unique app activation code (attached inside the packaging box, which can be found by opening the box lid. If there is no activation code in your package, please contact customer service).
Q13. The original package comes with AAA alkaline batteries. Can non-alkaline batteries be used?
No, the capacity of non-alkaline AAA batteries is too small to drive the smart recorder properly and to use it.
Q14. Can the smart recorder be used upon installation?
Before the first use, you need to download the “Try Sport” app. After downloading and registering, please perform calibration to customize your smart phone’s microphone performance baseline. After completing the calibration, please enter the unique app activation code to start using the Smart Tri-Ball exerciser.

Q39. Is there a privacy concern when sharing my data with family or friends?
No need to worry. The csv file only records the date, time, number of balls, and inspiratory volume of your training. The file name is also randomly generated, without any personal information recorded. Even if the file is leaked, it will not be linked to any of your personal information.
Q40. Can I log in to the same account on different phones? Will my data be lost?
Yes, you can log in to the same account on different phones, and your data is stored in the cloud using encryption technology, so it will not be lost. After logging in, you can download your historical data to the phone you logged in to.
Q41. Will my personal information be leaked during data transmission?
No, you don’t have to worry about personal information being leaked during transmission because the smart recorder tracks the movement of the balls with ultrasound and does not record or store any personal information. In addition, the app uses WPA2 encryption technology for transmission to ensure network security during data transmission. Your training results data is in a csv file that only you can share externally and only contains the date, time, ball number, and inhalation volume, without any personal information recorded or linked. So there is no need to worry about personal information leakage.
Q42. How can I backup my test results data?
Your data is securely stored in the cloud through encryption technology, so there’s no need to backup. However, if you have a backup requirement, you can export the data to a csv file and backup in another location.
